Communicating with your baby is very important as it is your baby’s way of letting you know their needs
Baby sounds, signals and cues
Babies will make different sounds and cues for their various needs. You will learn these very quickly as you get to know your baby.
Remember babies have five senses
Communicating with your baby enables you to foster a close bond as some may like stroking and tickling, whereas others prefer just to hear your voice. To help your baby to become relaxed baby massage is a great relaxation tool. Babies learn to know the smell of their mother and can react differently to different smells.
Baby body language
Babies will not like fast movements around them as this can startle them and upset them. Your baby is likely to cry when you are not around them, or if they don’t have your full attention.
Talk to your baby
Talk to your baby as much as you can. Even if it is dictating to them what you are doing. They love the sound of your voice, and it helps their communication skills. They start to learn the meaning of words through tone and facial expressions.
The beginning of words
Around 6-8 months, your baby should start to babble and say sounds such as mamma and dada; however, this can vary in ages as all children progress in different ways. It would help if you built on what they are saying to you, also known as ‘scaffolding’. Respond to them with a question or a statement such as ‘yes, there is daddy’ or ‘mummy is cooking dinner’.
